Wrought Iron

Wrought iron is an iron alloy with a much lower carbon content than cast iron. It is malleable and therefore has often been used alongside other materials such as marble or glass because it could be hammered and rolled into shape. It was often used in lamp design as well as garden features such as gates and fences.

Note that these identical bronze grills can be found at the front entrance of the Cochise County Courthouse in Bisbee, Arizona which was designed by architect Roy Place in 1931.

Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet

Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet (1880–1950) was a French sculptor of Belgian birth who worked during the early-to-mid 20th century. The subject matter of her best known work was primarily Arab female dancers. The majority of her career output in sculpture can be classified as being of the Art Deco style.

Colinet was a frequent exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Francais and Salon des Independents art exhibitions in Paris. Her sculptures, most of which depicted beautifully figured, energized, and dramatic female forms, were exhibited posthumously at the Paris Salon for nearly 30 years. Reference: Wikipedia

Silver Mounted

Many high quality items were silver mounted during the Art Deco era. Silver could be used to mount glass, wood, hardstone and many other materials. Some silver mounted items were hallmarked but many were not as the weight of silver often fell below the amount legally required for hallmarking.

Silver Tankards

Art Deco silver tankards usually had clean or geometrical lines. During the Art Deco era is was still possible to get tankards which fell under earlier designs, just as it is now so although a tankard may have hallmarks dating it to the Art Deco era, it may not be a true Art Deco design.

Platinum

Traces of platinum have been found in Ancient Egyptian jewelry, showing that it has been around for centuries (1), however, it really gained popularity from the 1900’s and has remained so ever since. Before the metal became popular in Western jewelry, diamonds were often mounted in silver, but by the Art Deco era, platinum was the most popular metal for displaying diamonds. It is harder than gold and less likely to break.

French Gold

French Gold. France was the birthplace of the modern hallmarking system in Europe with the Goldsmiths Statute of 1260 promulgated under Etienne Boileau, Provost of Paris, for King Louis IX. A standard for silver was thus established. In 1275, King Philip III prescribed, by royal decree, the mark for use on silver works, along with specific punches for each community’s smiths. In 1313, his successor, Philippe IV “the Fair” expanded the use of hallmarks to gold works. Reference: Wikipedia.

Josef Lorenzl

Josef Lorenzl was born on 1 September 1882 in Vienna, Austria and died there on 15 August 1950. Little is known about his early years, but more is known about his later life. Lorenzl started his career working at a foundry at the Vienna Arsenal where he learned the techniques of bronze casting.
